The U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday rescued a group of Cubans who were asking for help at Cay Sal Bank in the Bahamas.
On Friday, a similar event occurred when the HC-144 Ocean Sentry crew alerted the Coast Guard about a group of Cubans stranded on Anguilla Cay. Authorities provided them with food, water and a radio to establish communication.
In response to a request for assistance from Bahamian authorities, the U.S. Coast Guard dispatched the crew of the Cutter Northland to the area, who were able to rescue the migrants from the two islands, prioritizing their safety and well-being as they navigated the waters.
Upon boarding the Coast Guard vessel, the migrants underwent identity verification and received food, water, shelter and essential medical assistance before their return to the Bahamas.
“The Coast Guard and its partners in the Southeast Homeland Security Task Force are diligently patrolling the Florida Straits, Windward Passage and Mona Passage to save lives by removing migrants from unsafe environments and deterring dangerous illegal immigration activity,” said Lt. Connor Pascale, Coast Guard liaison officer in the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands.
“These illegal migration journeys on unseaworthy vessels are extremely dangerous and put the lives of you and your loved ones at risk.”
